Artificial intelligence is reshaping mental health care—changing how we document, assess, and even conduct therapy sessions. Yet many clinicians feel caught between curiosity and caution: intrigued by what AI can offer but uncertain about its risks, limitations, and ethical boundaries.
Beyond professional practice, AI is also influencing how clients understand themselves, their relationships, and even their therapists. As technology evolves faster than regulation, clinicians need a steady, informed foundation to navigate this new terrain—without losing sight of what makes therapy healing and human.
This practical, clinically focused workshop helps therapists feel confident and prepared to engage with AI thoughtfully and ethically. You don’t need a tech background—only a clinician’s curiosity and commitment to client care. Together, we’ll explore how AI systems actually work, where their insights fall short, and how to apply sound clinical judgment when technology enters the therapeutic space.
Through live demonstrations, case examples, and interactive discussions, participants will examine real clinical scenarios—how to respond when clients bring AI into therapy, how to use AI effectively, and how to protect privacy, intimacy, and professional trust.
Topics Include:
- Ethical and professional responsibility in AI-informed practice
- Privacy, confidentiality, and data stewardship
- Relational dynamics and boundary considerations
- Distinguishing between human tasks and appropriate AI adjuncts
- Integrating AI conversations into the therapeutic process
Designed for clinicians who want to stay informed and intentional, this workshop emphasizes discernment over hype—supporting therapists in using AI responsibly, protecting their clients’ trust, and preserving the artistry of the therapeutic relationship in a rapidly changing landscape.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Develop a practical, clinician-centered understanding of AI
- Apply clinical judgment when clients bring AI into therapy
- Distinguish appropriate adjunctive uses of AI from therapeutic processes that must remain human
- Identify and manage ethical, privacy, and professional risks associated with AI use
- Integrate AI-related conversations into therapy in clinically meaningful ways
